Satya Nadella


Satya Nadella is the executive chairman and CEO of Microsoft, one of the world's largest software firms. He is an Indian-American business executive. He joined Microsoft in 1992 and progressed through the ranks to become the leader of several departments and projects, particularly in the cloud computing arena. In 2014, he succeeded Steve Ballmer as CEO of Microsoft, and in 2021, he will succeed John W. Thompson as Chairman. He graduated from Manipal Institute of Technology with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, a master's degree in computer science from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and a master's degree in business administration from the University of Chicago. He is widely recognized as a visionary leader who has altered the culture, strategy, and performance of Microsoft.


Satya Nadella's childhood was molded by a strong interest in technology and a desire to learn. He was born on August 19, 1967, in Hyderabad, India, into a family that valued education and promoted intellectual inquiry. Nadella demonstrated remarkable academic abilities and a deep interest in technology from a young age. His passion for computers and programming was clear as he tinkered with early computer systems for numerous hours. Nadella's curious temperament and will to succeed intellectually led him to the United States, where he sought higher education and eventually joined Microsoft. His formative childhood experiences, typified by a drive for knowledge and invention, shaped him into the important technology leader he is today, acting as CEO of one of the world's most recognized tech businesses.


Satya Nadella has a solid education in both engineering and business. He began his scholastic career at Hyderabad Public School, Begumpet, where he finished primary school. In 1988, he earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the Manipal Institute of Technology in Karnataka. In 1990, he moved to the United States and earned a master's degree in computer science from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He received a master's degree in business administration from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business in 1997 while working at Microsoft.

Early career:

Nadella began his career as a member of Sun Microsystems' technical staff, a leading computer hardware and software firm. He spent around two years there before joining Microsoft in 1992.

Microsoft career:

Nadella began his career at Microsoft working on the development of Windows NT, a seminal operating system geared especially at corporate users. He was then promoted to numerous roles and responsibilities throughout the company's divisions and products. Among his significant accomplishments are:
  • From 1999 to 2001, he served as vice president of Microsoft's bCentral small-business service.
  • From 2001 until 2007, he was the corporate vice president of Microsoft Business Solutions, where he oversaw the development and marketing of business products such as Dynamics CRM and ERP.
  • From 2007 until 2011, he was the senior vice president of research and development for the online services division, where he headed the engineering teams for Bing, MSN, and advertising platforms.
  • From 2011 to 2013, he served as president of Microsoft's server and tools division, increasing sales from $16.6 billion to $20.3 billion and increasing market share for products such as Windows Server, SQL Server, System Center, and Azure.
  • As executive vice president of the cloud and enterprise group from 2013 to 2014, he built Microsoft's cloud infrastructure and services business and helped it become a market leader.

Microsoft's CEO:

Nadella was appointed CEO of Microsoft on February 4, 2014, becoming the third person to occupy the role following Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer. He also joined the company's board of directors. As CEO, Nadella has prioritized three areas: rethinking productivity and corporate processes, developing an intelligent cloud platform, and enhancing personal computing experiences. Some of his major initiatives and accomplishments include:
  • Windows 10, a universal operating system that operates on PCs, tablets, phones, Xbox, and HoloLens, is being released.
  • Paying $26.2 billion buying LinkedIn, a professional social network, in 2016, making it one of the largest tech purchases in history.
  • Buying GitHub, a popular software development site, for $7.5 billion in 2018, broadening Microsoft's reach and influence in the open source sector.
  • In 2020, Microsoft will pay $7.5 billion for ZeniMax Media, a video game publisher that owns companies such as Bethesda Softworks and id Software. This would improve Microsoft's gaming portfolio and Xbox ecosystem.
  • In 2021, Microsoft will pay $19.7 billion for Nuance Communications, a pioneer in conversational AI and cloud-based healthcare solutions, increasing Microsoft's capabilities in natural language processing and healthcare technologies.
  • Acquiring Activision Blizzard for $68.7 billion in 2022 (pending regulatory approval), making it the largest tech purchase ever and bolstering Microsoft's gaming aspirations.
  • Increasing Microsoft's revenue from $86.8 billion in fiscal year 2014 to $168.1 billion in fiscal year 2021, more than doubling it in seven years
  • Increasing Microsoft's market capitalization from around $300 billion in February 2014 to more than $2 trillion in June 2021 (and again in January 2022), making it one of the world's most valuable companies.
  • Leading Microsoft's response to the COVID-19 pandemic by enabling remote work and learning solutions for customers and employees, donating millions of dollars to relief organizations and communities, and advocating for public health measures and digital inclusion initiatives.
  • Supporting Microsoft's mission to enable every person and organization on the planet to achieve more, as well as its vision to build a more inclusive, diverse, sustainable, and trustworthy digital world.
