Michael Bloomberg is a well-known American businessman who has achieved success in a variety of fields, including politics and philanthropy. He founded and is the CEO of Bloomberg L.P., a global leader in financial data services and media. He was also mayor of New York City for three consecutive terms from 2002 to 2013, and he ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020. He is well-known in the global steel industry for his vision, strategy, and leadership, as well as his support for various causes such as gun control, public health, and environmental protection. He is one of the world's wealthiest and most powerful people, with an estimated net worth of US$94.5 billion as of April 2023.


Michael Bloomberg grew up in a modest and challenging environment, having been born in 1942 to a middle-class Jewish family in Boston, Massachusetts. His father worked seven days a week as an accountant at a local dairy, and his mother was a secretary and the leader of their synagogue. His grandparents were Russian and Belarussian immigrants who came to the United States to escape persecution and poverty. Bloomberg grew up in a small house with his parents and sister, sleeping on the living room couch. Bloomberg's upbringing instilled in him the values of hard work, education, and perseverance. As he witnessed his family's and community's struggles, he developed a sense of social responsibility and civic duty. He went on to become one of the world's most successful and influential businessmen, politicians, and philanthropists, with a net worth of US$94.5 billion in April 2023.


He went to Hebrew school, had his bar mitzvah, and learned to play the piano. He was interested in science and engineering and took part in a number of projects and competitions. To pay for college, he also worked as a parking lot attendant and as an Eagle Scout. He graduated from Medford High School in 1960 and received a scholarship to Johns Hopkins University. He majored in electrical engineering and graduated with honors in 1964. He then attended Harvard Business School and received his MBA in 1966.

Business Career:

Bloomberg began his career at Salomon Brothers, a Wall Street investment bank, where he rose to the position of partner and head of equity trading and systems development. After a merger, he was fired in 1981 and received a $10 million severance package. He used the funds to establish his own business, Innovative Market Systems, which provided financial data and analysis to investors via computer terminals. Bloomberg L.P. later changed its name and expanded its services to include news, television, radio, and magazines. Bloomberg remained the company's CEO and majority owner, and it grew to be one of the most successful and influential firms in the financial industry. Bloomberg L.P. had over 20,000 employees in 120 countries and over 325,000 terminal subscribers as of 2023.

Political career:

Bloomberg entered politics in 2001, when he ran as a Republican for mayor of New York City. He spent $73 million of his own money on his campaign, which emphasized education, crime, transportation, and economic development. He won the election by just two percentage points over Democrat Mark Green. He took office in January 2002, just months after the devastating September 11 attacks. During his tenure, he faced numerous challenges and crises, including rebuilding Lower Manhattan, managing budget deficits, dealing with public health emergencies, and responding to natural disasters. He also implemented numerous reforms and initiatives to improve the city's quality of life and services, such as lowering crime rates, increasing graduation rates, expanding affordable housing, prohibiting smoking in public places, promoting public health campaigns, constructing new parks and bike lanes, and promoting arts and culture. He was re-elected twice by large margins, in 2005 and 2009. In 2007, he switched from Republican to independent status. After three terms as mayor, he stepped down in December 2013.

Philanthropic Career:

Bloomberg has been a generous philanthropist, donating billions of dollars to a variety of causes and organizations. In 2010, he signed The Giving Pledge, pledging to give away at least half of his fortune during his lifetime or in his will. He has been an advocate for causes such as education, health care, the environment, arts and culture, civic engagement, and social justice. He has also founded or co-founded several initiatives aimed at addressing global challenges and improving people's lives all over the world.
Bloomberg Philanthropies, which focuses on five areas: public health, arts and culture, the environment, government innovation, and education, is one of these initiatives; Everytown for Gun Safety, which advocates for gun control and violence prevention, is another. Beyond Coal Campaign, which works to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from coal-fired power plants; Partnership for Healthy Cities, which assists cities in implementing health and well-being policies and programs; America's Pledge, which mobilizes states, cities, businesses, universities, and other non-federal actors to uphold the Paris Agreement on climate change; Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy, which assists local governments in taking climate action; Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative, which provides mayors and city leaders with training and support; Bloomberg New Economy Forum, which brings together leaders from various industries to discuss the challenges and opportunities of the emerging global economy; Bloomberg Gender-Equality Index, which tracks the performance of companies committed to gender equality; Bloomberg Green, which covers environmental news, analysis, and solutions; Bloomberg Breakaway, a platform that connects CEOs of fast-growing businesses with peers, investors, and experts; Bloomberg Connects, which provides cultural institutions with digital guides; Bloomberg Live, which organizes gatherings of leaders from business, finance, technology, media, politics, and society; Bloomberg Media Initiative Africa, which promotes journalism education, media innovation, and media literacy, and civic engagement in Africa; Bloomberg New Economy Solutions , which funds projects that tackle global problems such as pandemics , climate change , and inequality; and Bloomberg Terminal , which provides financial data and analysis to investors through computer terminals.
