Ikea Success Story

Ikea

Introduction:

IKEA, officially known as Ingka Group, is a renowned Swedish multinational company specializing in furniture, home furnishings, and interior design. Founded in 1943 by Ingvar Kamprad, the name IKEA is an acronym for his initials (I.K.) along with the first letters of Elmtaryd, the farm where he grew up, and Agunnaryd, his hometown in Sweden. Over the years, IKEA has earned global recognition for its distinctive approach to retail, offering a wide range of stylish and affordable products, innovative design concepts, and a unique self-serve shopping experience. With a commitment to making well-designed, functional, and sustainable home furnishings accessible to the many, IKEA has established itself as a household name worldwide.

Early History of IKEA:

Ingvar Kamprad founded IKEA, a global furniture and home furnishings company, in 1943 in Sweden. The company began as a mail-order company selling various household goods before expanding into furniture, design, and retail. IKEA is well-known for its low-cost, functional, and fashionable products, as well as its creative business model and culture.

Founding of IKEA:

IKEA stands for the initials of Ingvar Kamprad (the founder), Elmtaryd (the farm where he grew up), and Agunnaryd (the village where he lived). In 1943, Kamprad was only 17 years old when he registered IKEA as a trading company. He spent a small sum of money given to him by his father as a reward for good grades. He began by selling pens, wallets, picture frames, and other items that he had purchased on the cheap in Stockholm.

Development of Furniture:

Kamprad expanded his product line with furniture purchased from local manufacturers in 1948. He quickly discovered that furniture was more profitable and popular than other products. He also noticed that some of his competitors were sacrificing quality in order to keep prices low, which he refused to do. In his brochure, he explained his philosophy: "Our low prices - by far the lowest in the land - are possible thanks to a high turnover, direct delivery from the factory, and very low overheads."

Launch of Catalogue and Store:

Kamprad released the first IKEA catalogue in 1951, which included 28 pages of furniture and home accessories. The catalogue was an efficient way of reaching customers throughout Sweden, particularly in rural areas. The catalogue also reflected Kamprad's vision of improving people's lives by providing well-designed and functional products at reasonable prices.
Kamprad opened the first IKEA showroom in lmhult, Sweden, in 1953. Customers could see and touch the products before purchasing them in the showroom. The products were also displayed in realistic settings such as living rooms, bedrooms, and kitchens. The showroom was a success, drawing a large number of visitors.

Innovation of Flatpack and Self-Assembly:

The flatpack and self-assembly concept was one of the most significant innovations introduced by IKEA. One of Kamprad's coworkers suggested removing the legs of a table to fit it into a car. Kamprad realized that doing so could save space and money on transportation and storage. He also believed that customers would enjoy assembling their own furniture and become more attached to it if they did so.
IKEA introduced its first flatpack furniture, the LVET table, in 1956. The table came with assembly instructions and tools. The flatpack concept was so popular and efficient that it quickly became a trademark of IKEA products.
