She began her career as a conservative commentator before shifting to the left on a variety of issues. In 2003, she ran as an independent candidate for governor of California, but she dropped out. She later rose to the position of president and editor-in-chief of The Huffington Post Media Group, which included a number of other online media outlets. Huffington cofounded and served as editor in chief of The Huffington Post website in 2005. It was set up as a group blog, with hundreds of guest contributors' words published each week. It also included original reporting and investigative reporting. It quickly became one of the world's most popular and influential online media outlets.
